Reading, PA, the county seat for Berks County, is the fifth most populated city in Pennsylvania. The development of the entire area likely stems from the region being the birthplace of the now-defunct Reading Railroad, making the city thoroughly connected. The trains brought anthracite coal from the Pennsylvania Coal Region to cities along the Schuylkill River. Of course, the region is more than just trains. Not only is industry widely spread, Berks County is third among all Pennsylvania counties in revenue from agriculture.

Industry remains thriving in Reading, where both East Penn Manufacturing Co. Inc. and Carpenter Technology Corp. continue to show growth. Other top employers in the area are the Berks County Government and the Reading School District. Though times have changed greatly from when Reading Railroad ruled the rails, the region has managed to change well with the times.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ minor league affiliate (AA), now known as the Fightin’ Phils, plays at First Energy Stadium in Reading. The area is also home to the Reading Royals, the minor league affiliate for the Washington Capitals hockey team. Long a hotbed for art and culture, the city houses the Reading Symphony Orchestra.
